Mission Statement

  • To provide the “best” professional lake management services and products to a diversified client base throughout the northeast

  • These services and products shall be founded on science; chosen and applied objectively to each client’s requirements; and have reasonable potential for success.

  • We shall forego short-term profits in favor of building lasting client relationships and confidence.

  • We shall conduct our business in a manner in which our employees are proud of their work; can earn a better than average industry wage; and share in the profitability of the company when financial performance meets annual goals.

Aquatic Control manages several hundred pond/lake/reservoir and wetland systems each year. The bulk of these projects are performed throughout New England and New York, however, the company has also worked on projects in many other states along the east coast, as well as in Mexico and Puerto Rico.  Since its formation in 1976, Aquatic Control has practiced a truly integrated approach to pond and lake management and has contributed significantly to advancements in both chemical and non-chemical techniques for managing nuisance/invasive aquatic vegetation and algae.

In addition to holding aquatic pesticide licensing/certification in all New England states and NY, we also own/operate one of the largest fleets of mechanical harvesting/hydro-raking machinery in the country, with several various sized Harvesters, Hydro-Rakes, Transport Barges and smaller-scale, dredging equipment.  We design, install and service a variety of aeration/water circulation devices. Aquatic Control pioneered the use of Alum (aluminum sulfate) treatments in the northeast for nutrient reduction and nuisance algae control and we routinely utilize other management techniques like water level drawdown, bottom barriers and biological controls in our management programs, where applicable.  Our technical staff is recognized for its abilities to handle all aspects of the project, from the initial assessment through permitting, implementation and follow-up monitoring.

Aquatic Control employs nine full-time professionals, including six degreed Biologists and one Environmental Engineer.   Most of these professionals have been with the company for a minimum of five years and each is experienced and licensed/certified for aquatic herbicide/algaecide applications. Gerald Smith, founder and President of the company, is a past Director of the North American Lake Management Society and founding member and Past-President of the Northeast Aquatic Plant Management Society.  He has received a number of regional and national awards for his contributions to the field of lake and pond management.

We assign an experienced project manager to handle each account. Unlike some competitive firms that employ mostly seasonal Field Technicians to perform the work, it is our practice that a degreed Biologist or Engineer oversee every project and most often be on-site to perform chemical treatments, regardless of project size or budget. We are consistently selected for the more technically challenging and “higher-profile” lake management projects.

We have been selected by the state environmental agencies for aquatic invasive plant management consulting and implementation projects in MA, ME, CT, VT, NY and NH. Other clients include the Nature Conservancy of CT, the US Army Corps of Engineers, the US Fish & Wildlife Service, along with literally hundreds of  cities/towns, lake/pond associations and individual pond owners.
