Physical Weed Control Techniques
Where chemical and mechanical weed control is undesirable
or not feasible, physical weed control techniques may be the perfect
solution.
Weed Barriers
Aquatic
Control is the most experienced and largest distributor of benthic weed barrier
in the northeast. We distribute Aquatic Weed Net(tm) and several other lines
of bottom barriers. These gas permeable barriers are secured to the lake bottom,
preventing rooted plant growth. Benthic barriers provide an effective and fairly
low cost weed control strategy for small beachfront areas.
Diver Hand Pulling
Diver hand pulling is often used where plant density is low, or
in combination with Mechanical Harvesting to "clean up" the edges
of a waterbody where the water depth becomes insufficient for
the harvester to operate. Diver hand pulling is also recommended
in areas where desirable species are intermixed with nuisance
or invasive species.
Lake Level Drawdown
Lowering the water level of a waterbody can have a dramatic
impact on some nuisance vegetation problems. Drawdown
can be used where there is a water control structure that allows
the managers of lakes or reservoirs to drop the water level in
the waterbody for extended periods of time. In winter, lowering
the water level exposes the sediment to both freezing
and loss of water. Freezing can have a dramatic impact on aquatic
plants that
have no overwintering structures such as viable seeds.
